Stuart Johnston


Stuart Johnston joined Squadron Energy as CEO in July 2017.

Between 2010 and 2017 he was CEO of DBP, the owner and operator of the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP), Western Australia’s most important piece of energy infrastructure. During his time at DBP he was involved in the expansion of the main pipeline to Perth and the completion of several new pipeline and energy infrastructure projects. From 2015 to 2017 he was also a Non-Executive Director of Energy Developments Limited (EDL). EDL owns a diverse, global portfolio of power generation assets in two core business areas; Remote Energy and Clean Energy.

Prior to joining DBP he enjoyed a 20 year career with Royal Dutch Shell including his last role as Vice President Strategy Portfolio & Planning with Shell Upstream International. During this time he held Board positions on London Array Ltd. (offshore wind energy), and Avancis (Solar power JV). Between 2000-2004 he worked for Shell Development Australia in Business Development roles in Melbourne and Perth. In addition to his Australian experience Stuart has also worked in the Netherlands, the USA, and the UK during his career with Shell and has experience in pipeline operations, offshore construction and LNG project development. He has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Nottingham and a MBA from London Business School.

Steve Phelps

Head of Exploration

Steve Phelps joined Squadron Energy as Head of Exploration in July 2018.

Steve is a Geoscientist and Explorer who spent 33 years with Shell and previously BP, in Upstream oil and Gas roles around the world.
From 2013-2017 he was Shell’s Global Chief Exploration Geologist, and was involved in rationalising the Exploration portfolio and personnel from BG after the Shell acquisition in 2015/16. From 2009-2013 he was Exploration Manager for Shell Alaska and helped manage the venture get to drill the first offshore Arctic wells in over 20 years. He has held both business accountable roles and functional capability roles in one of the world’s largest energy companies.

His previous Shell and BP experience encompassed a spell as Exploration Manager for Australia and New Zealand, as well as Upstream roles in Houston, Africa (Libya and Nigeria), Oman and the UK.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree 1st Class Honours in Applied Geophysics from the University of Wales and is Alumni from the IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is also a Fellow of the Geological Society, London UK and a Melbourne Cricket Club member.
